Free Australian Tax Invoice Template
In Australia the document title matters. If you are registered for GST, your invoice should be a tax invoice, because your customer needs one to claim GST credits for purchases over $82.50 (including GST). If you are not registered, send a regular invoice without GST.
What the ATO requires on a tax invoice
- The words "Tax invoice", clearly visible
- Your identity (business name) and your ABN
- The date of issue
- A brief description of what you sold, including quantity and price
- The GST amount (if any) payable, and the extent to which each item is taxable
- For sales of $1,000 or more: the buyer's identity or ABN
GST basics
GST is 10%. You must register once your GST turnover reaches $75,000 a year (or $150,000 for non-profits); taxi and ride-sourcing drivers must register regardless. If the total includes GST, a statement like "Total price includes GST" is enough for many invoices.
Not registered for GST?
Title the document "Invoice", leave the tax rate at 0% and still quote your ABN. Businesses paying you without an ABN on the invoice may be required to withhold tax at the top marginal rate.
Using the template
- Set the currency to AUD.
- Put "Tax invoice" in the invoice title or notes and add your ABN to your details.
- Use a 10% tax rate on taxable items.
- Add your BSB and account number, then download the PDF.
FAQ
What is the difference between an invoice and a tax invoice in Australia?
A tax invoice is issued by a GST-registered business and contains the details the ATO requires so the buyer can claim GST credits. An ordinary invoice does not include GST.
Do I need an ABN on my invoice?
Yes, you should quote your ABN. Without it, a business paying you may have to withhold tax from the payment.
Do I need to send a tax invoice for small sales?
You only have to provide a tax invoice for sales over $82.50 including GST, but a customer can request one within 28 days.
